**What it is:** The “stronger” syllable in a word.  
**What it’s for:** Sound natural and be understood. Wrong stress can confuse listeners.  
**Example:** PREsent (noun) vs preSENT (verb)

  * Many 2-syllable nouns/adjectives: stress first: **TA**ble, **HAP**py
  * Many 2-syllable verbs: stress second: re**LAX**, de**CIDE**
  * Words ending in **-tion/-sion**: stress the syllable before: edu**CA**tion

  * Mark stress when learning new words: pho**TO**graph, pho**TO**grapher, photo**GRA**phic
  * Clap on the stressed syllable.
