Past Simple

What it is: A tense for finished actions in the past at a known time. What it’s for: Tell stories and talk about yesterday/last week/2019, etc. Example: “I visited my friend yesterday.”

Form

  • Affirmative: S + V2 (past)
    1. I worked. / She went.
  • Negative: S + did not + V1
    1. I didn’t work.
  • Question: Did + S + V1?
    1. Did you work?

Time signals

  • yesterday, last night/week/year, ago, in 2020

Common mistakes

  • “Did you went?” ❌ → “Did you go?” ✅
  • “I didn’t went” ❌ → “I didn’t go” ✅
