Present Perfect

What it is: A tense connecting the past to the present. What it’s for: Talk about experiences, results now, and unfinished time. Example: “I have finished my homework.” (Result: it’s done now)

Form

  • Affirmative: S + have/has + V3
    1. I have eaten. / She has eaten.
  • Negative: S + have/has not + V3
    1. He hasn’t seen it.
  • Question: Have/Has + S + V3?
    1. Have you ever been to Da Nang?

Common uses

  • Experience: “I’ve been to Japan.”
  • Result now: “She has lost her keys.” (she can’t open the door now)
  • Unfinished time: “I’ve worked a lot this week.” (this week isn’t finished)

Common signals

  • ever, never, already, yet, just, since, for, this week/today

Common mistakes

  • “I have saw” ❌ → “I have seen” ✅
  • “I’ve finished yesterday” ❌ → use Past Simple: “I finished yesterday” ✅
