Intonation

What it is: The rise and fall of voice in speech. What it’s for: Show meaning, emotion, and question/statement signals. Example: “Really?” (rising) vs “Really.” (falling)

Common patterns

  • Falling (statements, WH-questions):
    1. “I’m ready.”
    2. “Where are you going?”
  • Rising (yes/no questions, uncertainty):
    1. “Are you ready?”
    2. “I think so…?”

Practice

  • Record 5 questions/day and compare with native audio.
  • Use short dialogues for training.
