Inference
What it is: Understanding meaning that is not directly stated (read between the lines). What it’s for: Understand tone, implied meaning, and exam questions. Example: “He looked at the dark clouds and grabbed an umbrella.” → It will probably rain.
Common clues
- Context words (weather, emotions, time)
- Cause-effect (because, so, therefore)
- Contrast (but, however)
- Pronouns (it/they/this refers to what?)
Practice
- After each paragraph, ask: “What does the writer suggest?”
- Write 1 inference sentence: “This implies that…”
