english:reading:inference

Inference

What it is: Understanding meaning that is not directly stated (read between the lines). What it’s for: Understand tone, implied meaning, and exam questions. Example: “He looked at the dark clouds and grabbed an umbrella.” → It will probably rain.

Common clues

  • Context words (weather, emotions, time)
  • Cause-effect (because, so, therefore)
  • Contrast (but, however)
  • Pronouns (it/they/this refers to what?)

Practice

  • After each paragraph, ask: “What does the writer suggest?”
  • Write 1 inference sentence: “This implies that…”

Hard words (Glossary)

  • *inference* /ˈɪnfərəns/: suy luận
  • *imply* /ɪmˈplaɪ/: ngụ ý
  • *tone* /təʊn/: sắc thái/cảm xúc trong văn
  • *clue* /kluː/: manh mối
