Skimming
What it is: Reading quickly to get the main idea (not details). What it’s for: Decide if the text is relevant and understand structure fast. Example: Read titles + first sentences to know the topic.
Scanning
What it is: Looking for specific information (keywords, numbers, names). What it’s for: Answer questions quickly (exams, work documents). Example: Find “price”, “date”, “deadline” without reading everything.
How to practice
- Skim: title → headings → first sentence each paragraph.
- Scan: choose 3 keywords and search visually in the text.
