What it is: Words that naturally go together (common word pairs/phrases). What it’s for: Sound natural and reduce awkward sentences. Example: make a mistake ✅ (not do a mistake ❌)
Common types
- Verb + Noun: make a decision, take a break, pay attention
- Adjective + Noun: heavy rain, strong coffee, fast internet
- Noun + Noun: bus stop, language school
- Adverb + Adjective: really important, deeply worried
Practice
- Learn collocations by topic (work, study, daily life).
- When you meet a new collocation, store the full phrase, not a single word.
