What it is: A verb + particle (up/down/on/off…) with a new meaning. What it’s for: Understand real conversations and informal English. Example: “turn on” = start (a device)
Common examples
- wake up: I wake up at 6.
- look for: I’m looking for my keys.
- give up: Don’t give up.
- pick up: I picked up the package.
- find out: I found out the truth.
Key note
- Some are separable: “turn the light off” / “turn off the light”
- Some are not: “look after” (not “look the baby after”)
